So You Have a Desire to be Rich! What To Do Next

Ok, well then let’s see if You Have the Courage to Be Rich . I’m going to walk you through a practical, measurable, followable, doable process of turning your desires into riches. This is no wishy-washy, let’s grab the guitar and sing Kumbaya around the fire type of exercise. This will really test if you’re serious about making money and building wealth once and for all. If you do this, you will be taking a MAJOR step forward in your progress towards any amount of riches you desire. If you read what I write here without doing the exercise, you’re clearly not ready to be a player in the game yet. You’re still stuck on the bench watching everyone else play. If that’s where you’re at, that’s perfectly ok. Maybe you’re just not ready yet. Maybe some other time. But if you are ready to move forward, I’m going to walk you through an exercise that’s going to transform your life.

Before I walk you through the exercise, let me first tell you that this is not my invention. This exercise is taught by Napoleon Hill in a book called “Think and Grow Rich”. I would hope that you’ve heard of it, and if I would venture a guess, you’ve probably even read it. This book has influenced and created more multi-millionaires and even billionaires than probably any other book in the world.

In his chapter on Desire, Napoleon Hill states that:

“Every human being who reaches the age of understanding of the purpose of money wishes for it. Wishing will not bring riches. But desiring riches with a state of mind that becomes an obsession, then planning definite ways and means to acquire riches, and backing those plans with persistence which does not recognize failure, will bring riches.”

What does Napoleon Hill mean by “Wishing will not bring riches”? He means that if we are to become rich, we must go beyond mere wishing. We must DESIRE riches. We must desire them with “a state of mind that becomes an obsession.” What does the mean by this? Do we have to become lunatics who are obsessed with money like Scrooge? Is this the Greedy Rich Person archetype Napoleon Hill is talking about here? The person who doesn’t care about anything but money? No. He’s saying we must DECIDE to be rich, and it has to be a FINAL DECISION. As in ” I DESIRE TO BE RICH. ” not “It would kinda be cool to be rich I suppose.” No, no, no. You need to be serious here. You need to COMMIT. As in, “I COMMIT TO BE RICH” or “I COMMIT TO BE WEALTHY” or “I COMMIT TO BE ABUNDANTLY FINANCIALLY PROSPEROUS”. Can you make that committment right now? Or does it make you want to run away when I say these things?

Does it raise feelings of guilt? Does it make you feel like saying “Well, I want to do what’s best for the world and give of myself and if I get something back then that’s ok, but I’m not really in it for money or riches, I just want to help the world be a better place and stuff.”?? If it does, then that’s great, you can stop reading right here and continue on your quest to help the world. However, if you are one of the people who DOES want to help the world but wants to be RICH / WEALTHY / PROSPEROUS as well and doesn’t feel there should be anything wrong with that, then it is time to make a committment to being rich. Say to yourself “I am rich.” Does that feel ok? “I am wealthy.” Does that feel ok? “I make money doing what I love.” Does that feel ok?

Are you committed? Great. Let’s move onto the practical step by step process for transforming your desires into gold. You’re going to need a piece of paper and pen, or fire up a word processor window to follow along here.

(STEP 1) “First fix in your mind the exact amount of money you desire. It is not sufficient merely to say ‘I want plenty of money.’ Be definite as to the amount. “

Ok. Let’s stop for a second here. I’ll offer a personal recommendation as to what kind of number to pick. *IF* you have a pre-determined deadline already in your life, such as you need to make a certain amount of money within the next 6 months to pay for something very important in your life, then you will want to pick a number you desire to acquire within that timeframe. If you do not have a specific timeframe, I suggest you think about the amount of money you desire to acquire within the next 24 months or less.

This number should stretch the limits of your beliefs, but it shouldn’t be completely unbelievable. If you can close your eyes and visualize holding a cheque for that amount within the next 24 months (don’t worry HOW it will happen yet), then you’re good to go.

I’m going to do this right along with you so that you know I’m not lying when I say to ACTUALLY DO THIS. So here goes:

“I desire $2,000,000 or more.”

(STEP 2) “Second, determine exactly what you intend to give in return for the money you desire. (There is no such reality as something for nothing)”

If you already know exactly what to write for this, then ignore what I’m about to say. If you don’t already know then I would like you to think about this from a certain perspective for a second. Don’t think about it as you having to give SOMETHING that you already have, or a skill you already possess, or a payment for the desire you have. Think of it from the point of view of “What would you LIKE to give? What would you ENJOY giving?” See the subtle difference? What I’m saying is that THIS step is also part of picking what you DESIRE. Meaning you picked what you desire to GET and now you’re picking what you desire to GIVE.

Maybe my answer to this one will help you out.

“I desire to inspire, teach and ignite the passion within people to awaken them and help them become Inspired Money Makers doing what they love, or something better.”

If you don’t think you know what you want to give yet, it is probably because you don’t think you have anything to give worth the amount you’re asking for. That’s ok, you can always change, modify, update these statements later, but for now if you’re totally stuck why not put something like “I intend to become an Inspired Money Maker, sharing my true passions in life, doing what I love and helping people.”

(STEP 3) “Third, establish a definite date when you inted to posses the money you desire.”

When picking a date, use a specific date not a time frame. Meaning, pick a calendar date not “2 years from now” as an example.

Mine is Tuesday, October 6, 2009 or sooner.

(STEP 4) “Fourth, create a definite plan for carrying out your desire, and begin at once, whether you are ready or not, to put this plan into action.”

Here’s where a lot of people will get lost. You might be thinking “But wait! I don’t *HAVE* a plan to make $X by ____. If i DID don’t you think I would already be following it!? I have no clue how to make that much money in that time frame!”right? This is an evolving plan. It will change over time, it will be added to, and it will continue to be updated on a regular basis. I have never met anywho who had a completely perfect thought out plan on day one. That is not what he’s asking for. He’s just asking for a plan from your point of view right now. Meaning, what will get you to the top of the hill you’re staring at right now? Don’t worry what’s past the hill. Once you get on top of this hill you’ll be able to see a bit further, add to your plan, and keep going on that part of the plan until you reach the next hilltop. Your plan right now might be as simple as “Start a blog” or “Research a domain name.” or “Subscribe to Paul’s RSS feed and newsletter” smile or “Send birthday cards to all my clients.” or whatever. If you don’t know what your plan is say to yourself “It’s ok that I don’t know, but if I did what would the plan be?” It doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s just a start.

If you still have absolutely nothing, start with this: “I will follow this process I’m learning here daily, and ask myself the same question of what my plan is every single day until I get an answer.”

Mine is rather long so I won’t post it all here, but it includes

(1) I will consistently write articles for my blog InspiredMoneyMaker.com.

(2) I will continue to research, study, and focus on my area of expertise of helping people to become Inspired Money Makers doing what they love daily.

(3) I will research, learn and develop all kinds of great products to help me reach the greatest number of people with my message and help to Inspire, Teach and Ignite them with Passion.

(4) Or something better, easier and more helpful.”

(STEP 5) “Write out a clear, concise statement of the amount of money you intend to acquire, name the time limit for its acquisition, state what you intend to give in return for the money, and describe clearly the plan through which you intend to accumulate it.”

Well, this is basically what we’ve already done except it’s time to put it into one statement as opposed to bullet points. If you haven’t already done so, this is the time to put the pen to paper or hands to keyboard and start typing yours up.

Mine is:

I desire to earn $2,000,000 or more by helping to Inspire, Teach and Ignite the Passion within people to awaken them and help them become Inspired Money Makers doing what they love, or something better by Tuesday, October 6, 2009 or sooner. I will accomplish this by (1) consistantly writing articles for my blog InspiredMoneyMaker.com, (2) continueing to research, study, and focus on my area of expertise of helping people to become Inspired Money Makers doing what they love daily and by (3) researching, learning and developing all kinds of other great products to help me reach the greatest number of people with my message and help to Inspire, Teach and Ignite them with Passion, (4) Or something better, easier and more helpful, for the greatest good of all.”

(STEP 6) “Sixth, read your written statement aloud, twice daily, once just before retiring at night, and once after arising in the morning. As you read – see and feel and believe yourself already in possession of the money.”

Here’s a little trick you might want to try. Purchase a digital voice recorder. Every morning, state the date and then read your statement out loud into the voice recorder. Even if you miss a day here or there, wouldn’t it be cool one day to listen to these? Imagine like 10 years from now, you’re a super successful millionaire and you’ve got these recording of yourself when you were still building your financial independence! Wouldn’t that be cool?

Remember that you must SEE, and FEEL and BELIEVE yourself already in possession of the money. This is where your imagination comes in. Obviously you don’t have the money you desire while reading your statement yet, otherwise you wouldn’t need to be doing this! So you’re going to have to PRETEND and IMAGINE you’re already there, in the future, sitting there reading your statement on the DAY OF getting your desired outcome. Put your logical mind away for now and allow your creative side to shine here. Imagine being in that day already right now. How does it feel? Remember, it doesn’t have to be 2 years from now, it could be sooner so don’t get stuck on a specific date too much.

PHEW, that was exhausting, no? Ok, it wasn’t that hard, but it also wasn’t that easy was it? Did you actually do it? You won’t get any benefit from this if you don’t actually do it. It’ll just be yet another article, book, resource you read that you intellectually understood perhaps but did nothing about. You’ll continue to be part of the 95% of the worlds population that’s broke. But that’s ok. Perhaps you’re just not ready yet, or perhaps building wealth and Making Money doing what you love is not that important to you yet. If you did follow along and you did perform this exercise, I congratulate you and you should really congratulate yourself for doing an awesome job! Most people won’t do it. You’re already seperating yourself from the “broke herd” just by actually doing this. Doesn’t it feel great!?

One last thing. I really wanted to do this for my readers like you but when I scanned my bookshelf this week I realized that my copy of Think and Grow Rich wasn’t there. I remembered that I gave it away to a friend yet again (this always happens). I didn’t want to dissapoint you so I took the time to drive to the bookstore this evening and I picked up a copy of Think and Grow Rich so that I could be absolutely sure that I didn’t miss a word in any of the steps delivering you this information. I didn’t even want to trust any of the online eBook versions of Think and Grow Rich I’ve seen because I wanted to be absolutely, positively SURE that not a single word was changed or modified from the original version I used myself since I first read it in 1998. If you found this article inspiring, if it helped you in any way, take the opportunity to leave me some feedback, refer this article to a friend, add it to some social bookmarking sites, subscribe to my newsletter or my RSS feed, or all of the above so that you inspire ME to continue to write more and more free articles to help you and people like you.

This post rocks! Why is no one commenting?

Paul, I was never sure about exactly how to focus on the amount you want. For example, I wondered what time frame we’re talking about. Is this a lifetime goal, or the goal for the week? You’ve answered this question here, suggesting 24 months or less.

I also wasn’t sure if we’re supposed to focus on how much we want to have, or how much more we want to accumulate. If you have $1 million and want $2 million, do you focus on earning $1 million, or having $2 million? And do you focus on income from your inspired money-making vehicle (say a blog), or total income (including a job, investments, etc)?

You know… I really wasnt ready when I read some similar articles on stevepavlina.com. I guess I really wasnt ready. but I took time to think my self through a little bit of something good I did with an aim to succeed and the first thing that came to mind was that I had quit smoking (been 6 months now). I followed the visualizations and affirmations you say and never paid a second thought until I read some of the articles of Steve Pavlina. And now your little exercise seems to have added on to it. I have done the exercise and I will improve on what I have written down. Great article… Many thanks..

I randomly stumbled across your blog and I just thought I would take the time and reply. I never reply to these things, but this post is really amazing. When I was very young I read Think and Grow Rich…

I am a retired now but I have achieved great success in my life and it was because I actually *followed* the 6 steps in Think and Grow Rich. I give this book out to people quite often but very few actually follow the steps laid out in the book.

I think it is awesome that you actually did and do the steps and I have absolute faith that you will achieve your goals and desires. I wish you the best of luck.
