Quick Tip on Dealing With Change
Human beings are creatures of habit. From a young age we learn to develop specific habits in our ways of thinking and in our ways of taking action. The first time you tied your shoes, it may have taken you 15 minutes to get it right or even longer. Today you can probably do it in a few seconds. The reason we can do this is habit.
Habits form the basis of our everyday lives and they are a powerful force when used properly. However, far too often as we grow older we get set into our habitual ways of thinking and habitual ways of acting and it becomes difficult to change.
To become inspired money makers, often times we are going to have to start doing certain things differently. Doing things differently means you have be become comfortable with change. I think a large part of the fear of change comes from peoples inexperience with it. Meaning, they don’t consciously make an effort to practice making small changes in their lives and then they try to make some giant change all of a sudden.
One of the best ways to get comfortable around change is to practice it in small quantities. As you get used to small changes you will be able to work your way up to bigger changes over time. Here are a few examples of small changes you can play around with just to see how your brain reacts:
- Next time you’re at the grocery store, look at totally different brands of products from the ones you normally use. For example, if you normally purchase Palmolive dish detergent, try Joy. If you normally buy Joy, try Palmolive. Switch toothpaste brands. Try a new fruit you never buy or a new vegetable. Instead of buying your favorite chocolate bar, try one you’ve never tired before.
- When you’re at the mall, walk into a few stores you never walk into and check out what they sell.
- Spend one week watching only TV channels you never watch.
- If you’re a Mac lover, go to a store and play with a PC Laptop. If you’re a PC Lover, go play with a Mac laptop.
- Order a Pizza with completely different topics you normally don’t get.
- Drive to work using a completely different route.
- If you’re right handed, use your left hand to open doors for a week. If you’re left handed, use your right.Starting to get the idea? The concept is to introduce some change into your brain and show it that it can be OK to do that. You might discover that you actually enjoy the new pizza your ordered. Don’t freak out if you don’t though, because you’re probably used to your favorite pizza toppings but that is the whole point of this; to try something new. I normally get my pizza’s with pepperoni and some other toppings but one day I tried a veggie and I loved it. I still order a veggie once in a while just for fun.
I still remember when my wife and I first moved into our first apartment. We went grocery shopping and we were going to buy dish soap. I wanted to buy Palmolive. She wanted to buy Ivory. I said “Palmolive is way better.” and she said “No way, Ivory is better.” Why did we think each was better? Because that’s what our parents used at home. Are YOU using your parents dish soap?
If becoming an inspired money maker is going to mean that you have to make some major changes in your life in the next few years, why not start making some smaller changes to at least get your brain used to the idea of change. When you change some smaller things in your life and your brain sees the benefits of those changes it will start to realize that this whole “change thing” is actually good.
