Guaranteed Not to Fail

There is a very simple but powerful question you can ask yourself, whenever you’re stuck trying to figure out what to do about something. Your brain might impose subconscious limitations on the available options without you realizing that it is fear that’s blocking your answers.

For example, you might find yourself in a situation where you’d like to start a new business or get a promotion or something of that sort, but every time you ask yourself “What do I need to do next?” you get absolutely nothing. Perhaps a few thoughts cross your mind but none of them seem appealing and you dismiss them immediately.

The best way to see if it is the fear of failure that’s blocking your vision is to put yourself in a state of mind where you’re pretending that you cannot fail. Basically, ask yourself “In this situation, if I was GUARANTEED not to fail, what would I do?” and write down your answers. You’ll probably surprise yourself at the number of possibilities that suddenly show up.

If you ask yourself “If I was GUARANTEED TO FAIL, what would I do right now?” you’ll probably get an answer that describes exactly what you’re doing right now; nothing.

What will this tell you? This will tell you that the reason you’re not moving ahead is not because you don’t know what to do. The reason you don’t move ahead is because you are afraid of doing what you know you must do to move ahead. It is your fear of failure that’s paralyzing you.

If you find yourself paralyzed by the fear of failure, try taking some baby action steps towards your target. Instead of thinking about the big giant step you must take, think in terms of little tiny steps that will get you there a bit slower, but with much less fear. For example, lets say you want to start a business, but in your mind you’re deathly afraid of quitting your job and having no income to feed your family while you try to grow your business.

Instead of thinking in giant steps like that, think smaller. For example, could you at least think of a name for your business? Could you register a domain and start a website? Could you spend one hour per night working on it part time? I realize that you may be thinking that the business you want to start will take a full time effort and so a part time effort is too slow, but if you’re currently paralyzed and doing nothing anyways, small steps are better than no steps.

Think in terms of 1% steps. What can I do today that would take me 1% closer towards my target?

Another example of this could be the fear of rejection a sales person could have about making giant presentations, or someone who is afraid of public speaking. Instead of trying to go from zero to a group of 10,000 people, why not try doing a presentation in front of one person to start with. Then, grow it to 2 people. Once you feel comfortable with that, try presenting in front of 4 people, then 8 and then 16 etc.

Don’t dismiss baby steps, just because they seem like the slow way to go about things. How did you learn how to walk? Baby steps, right? I have yet to see a baby go from lying around on their back as an infant straight to running around the room the next morning.

So, if you’re feeling a bit stuck right now, ask yourself “If I was GUARANTEED not to fail, what would I do right now?” and then whatever answer you get, think about taking a baby step towards that.
