Transitioning to Doing What You Love – Tip #5: How Committed Are You?
A really important thing you’ll need to do during your transition to doing what you love is to really get clear on the outcome you’re seeking. Meaning, are you looking to change the world and make millions, are you looking to make enough to replace your current job to pay your bills, or are you just looking to make enough money doing what you love to earn some beer money?
Not everyone wants or needs to convert their passion into a multi-billion dollar empire. Some people are happy doing what they love and just making an extra couple hundred bucks a month doing what they love is perfect for them, while others look at it as an opportunity to replace their jobs, while others still look at it as the path towards total financial abundance.
It’s really important to get clear on what it is that you are seeking to achieve. The best way to think about it is in terms of commitment. Let’s say that you currently work full time doing something you find boring, but your passion is fitness and body sculpting for example. Look at the following statements:
1) I am committed to doing whatever is necessary to be fit, sculpt my body, and hopefully inspire others to do the same while earning some extra money.
2) I am committed to doing whatever is necessary to use my experience with fitness and body sculpting to make a full time income to replace my current job.
3) I am committed to doing whatever is necessary to use my experience with fitness and body sculpting to change the world by spreading the benefits of fitness and body sculpting across the whole globe, building my own fitness and body sculpting empire.
See how these statements require totally different levels of commitment? Well, if you’re only putting forth a level 1 commitment, but expecting level 3 results, that’s just not going to happen. It would be a lot more beneficial to just focus on becoming the best part-time personal trainer you can become. Maybe building a fitness empire is not for you right now, maybe you just want to do more of it for now and make some extra money. That’s fine, there is nothing wrong with that if that is what you’re inspired to do. Or perhaps your inspiration is to build a whole fitness empire right from start.
The point is to get really clear on what YOU want, not what others think you should do. Listen to your inspiration. What’s it telling you? Remember, that perhaps at this point in your life, a level 1 commitment is all you’re willing to make. Maybe you’ve got kids that are going to be leaving for school in a year and then you can afford to take this to the next level, but until then a part time commitment is all you can make.
It is much better to get clear on what you want to do, and then do that to the best of your abilities than to feel guilty for not automatically wanting to take your passion all the way to a world-wide level.
One such example is a guy who totally inspires me, named John Stone. He runs a fitness website at www.JohnStoneFitness.com . John decided one day to get fit and sculpt his body. However, it didn’t mean he had to quit his job and start a fitness empire. He simply began working on sculpting his body and began posting pictures of himself on his website on a daily basis. Eventually his website began to grow and he began making some extra cash from it. Years later his site is really popular and although I don’t know the exact figures, I don’t think it would be hard for him to replace his job income with the money from his website, nor would it be hard for him to take things a lot further and start a whole John Stone Fitness empire, if he hasn’t already.
The point is that you’re going to need to get really clear on what it is that you’re looking to do with your Inspired Money Maker idea. Are you looking to make some extra cash? Are you looking to replace your job? Are you looking to start an empire? Which of those are you COMMITTED to?
When I wrote about buliding a war chest for your transition for example, did you immediately run and implement that because you knew that you’re going to need extra cash to get your empire going? Or did you passively read the post, think about it, but weren’t really committed to taking the next step? Perhaps it’s because you’re just looking at this as a part-time thing right now.
Get clear on your level of commitment so that when you seek out resources like books, mentors, coaches, training programs, business systems, marketing systems, etc. you’ll know how much you want to invest in terms of time and money to make your dream come true. If you’re inspired to just make a part-time income being a fitness trainer for a few clients after work, you’ll need to seek out different resources compared to the person who’s inspired to open up a chain of gyms for example. Maybe all you need is some business cards, and some word of mouth advertising letting people know you’re now doing personal training.
The best thing to do is to think one year from now. If everything went smoothly just the way you’d like it to go, where would you like to take your passion? Would you still be working at your job, doing what you love on the side for extra money, or have you quit your job and you’re now doing only what you love doing?
Realize that each path requires a different level of work ethic and growth, and make the decision as to which one you’re COMMITTED to, not which one you fantasize about.
