Affiliate Marketing, Huh?

Comments: 6 Posted by : Paul Piotrowski

It’s been over two years since I’ve began my massive study and researching into Blogs and everything Blogging related. Inspired by the success of Professional Bloggers like Steve Pavlina and John Chow, I’ve been hooked on Blogging for over two years and things are really starting to take off for me.

Although the monetary success of making over $700 last month with my Blog pales in comparison to the +$30,000/month incomes the A-List Bloggers are pulling in, I’m not worried. I know I’m on the right track, and as I continue to write good quality content and attract more and more visitors the success of my Blog will continue to rise.

I know Alexa isn’t the most accurate of systems of measure, but in either case, I was taking a look at my stats today compared to John Chow and this is what I saw:

John Chow vs Inspired Money Maker Stats

The blue graph line on the graph is John Chow. The red line on the graph is Inspired Money Maker. My Blog beat John Chow’s traffic for a few weeks! Wee! :)

As I said, Alexa is not the most accurate tool, and I know John’s been away for the last few weeks on an Asia trip so his stats / traffic are a bit down and I’m well aware of the fact that John has +25,000 RSS subscribers and I’m only at around 300 so far.

But, having said that, my traffic and success has been pretty impressive especially since I haven’t really done any major promotional pushes, or spent any major money on advertising etc. It is comforting to know that it is possible to one day compete with and be in the same league as the A-Listers if we just continue to plug away and provide good, solid, quality content for our readership while at the same time promoting our Blogs.

I’m super happy and proud of myself for what I’ve been able to accomplish with this Blog especially in the last couple of months, and I’ll continue to work hard to bring you guys the most valuable content I possibly can.

However, as part of my strategy to earn even more income online I am also now going to be setting my sights on Affiliate Marketing. My Blog is going to continue to be my primary project, but I have recently been getting more and more interested in the income earning possibilities of Affiliate Marketing. Plus, for some reason I think it would be a fun challenge for me to learn how to do it.

I have to admit, so far I feel like a complete noob when it comes to Affiliate Marketing, and to be completely honest I really haven’t even fully wrapped my head around how it all even works yet. Meaning, I obviously understand the basic concepts of it as I make money from affiliate sales on this Blog, but what I still don’t fully understand is how people make these nice 6-figure incomes from it. When I first began researching Blogging as a business, it was definitely a lot easier to understand Blogging because most successful Bloggers are very open with sharing their “success tips” for Blogging freely and openly. Why? Because most professional Bloggers know that the average person is way too lazy to make money blogging. :)

The reality is that I can pretty much tell everyone in the world exactly what I’m doing to make money with my Blog, like I have been doing all along, and most people still won’t do anything with that information. The reason probably has to do with the fact that Blogging takes long term, consistent effort (aka hard work) and most people don’t have the sticking power to do it long term. So even though there are millions of Blogs popping up every day, I know people like John Chow, Steve Pavlina and Darren Rowse aren’t losing any sleep over that because they know that 99.999% of Bloggers won’t even make it past the 3 month mark.

I think because of this, it is EASY to find good, free, useful tips and “how to’s” on making money by blogging.

Affiliate Marketing seems to be a totally different animal. Everything seems to be clouded in a shroud of secrecy. Super secret techniques are discovered and people make a fortune on them. Then, once the technique has been bled dry and there’s no money to be made with it you can find it all over free forums. This kind of makes sense in a way. As an Affiliate Marketer, it takes time and money to find what works and if you share what works with others and show them exactly how you’re making money, they’ll just copy you and your little golden nugget isn’t as profitable for you anymore.

For some reason, it kind of reminds me of day trading in the stock market.

Has anyone else found this to be true with Affiliate Marketing? Or am I the only one who thinks there is a lot of conflicting information out there that all seems to be contradicting itself?

Yesterday I was doing some research and I found this product:
super affiliate blogger
Super Affiliate Blogger - WordPress Affiliate Marketing Solution

Super Affiliate Blogger is an Affiliate Marketing System created by Gobala Krishnan.
The package includes a complete system for Affiliate Marketing with Blogs. After visiting his site and reading some reviews of the package I decided to try it out, hoping that maybe the eBook would shed some more light on the whole “Affiliate Marketing Game”.

So far I’m pretty impressed with the information contained within the package but I haven’t gotten into the fully juicy parts yet. The system teaches everything you’ll need to know about Blogging to do Affiliate Marketing and that part is definitely good, but for me it’s information I already know. For example, he covers things like how to register a domain name, how to setup a Wordpress Blog, how to install plugins, themes and all the beginner stuff I already know myself. It’s definitely good and useful information for the beginner Blogger so it definitely needs to be in there, but I’m looking forward to see what I can learn in there about the whole “Affiliate Marketing” game.

I’ll keep you guys updated with what I learn about the whole Affiliate Marketing game, and hopefully there’s something of value I can share with you guys about making money online that way.

If anyone else has any good resources to share which relate to Affiliate Marketing, leave a comment or contact me privately if you wish. I definitely want to learn this game, so I’m looking for the right resources to do it with.

I know what you mean about the shroud of secrecy. It seems affiliate marketing really is a big secret and you either have to figure it out for yourself, or know someone who can teach you. Oh well….

Yeah Alexa isn’t the most accurate, but it does give you an indication of your growth. So congrats!

One of the best ways that I have found to promote an affiliate product is by building a lens on Squidoo. It has worked like a charm for me.

    Many blessings,

@Arturo Gonzalez: Would you mind sharing a bit more of how you’ve been successful using that method?

I’m fairly new to affiliate marketing as well.. I’ve made less than $50 since April, but what I do know is that Keyword research and content is king. If you do your research correct, find a hot product/market… Then like Arturo said, build a few lenses, write a few articles for eZine, and get a .info for $1 from GoDaddy for redirects… you should be good to go. Combine that with a handful of postings on Craigslist, some Myspace and Facebook marketing… and you’ve got yourself a campaign…

This isn’t even including PPC (which I have yet to dive into)

As far as I know, all these guys making $10,000 a month from affiliate marketing are primarily using PPC marketing, Joint Ventures, and Advertising opps… Straight up. They put $6000 into PPC and make $10,000 profit after expenses… Those are some big numbers… I prefer to stay low key, and connected.

Good luck Paul! I’m on this journey with you…
