StumbleUpon Drops a Bomb on Inspired Money Maker

Comments: 14 Posted by : Paul Piotrowski

Just after 9am this morning, StumbleUpon began sending an onslaught of traffic to my site targeting yesterday’s 101 Tips to Help You Make Money Doing What You Love post. I had no clue this was happening until a co-worker of mine at work mentioned that he ran across my post on Stumble Upon’s Buzz Page on his lunch hour. He had no clue it was my post, he just clicked on it and read it and then was really surprised to see my name.

I thought that was pretty neat, but didn’t really think too much of it until later on in the evening when I logged in to WordPress and my stat page looked really weird. I’m used to seeing my daily stats slowly growing at a steady rate, and then today I see this:

WordPress Stats

To see my visits count jump that high is just hilarious to me. I mean, between April 22nd and May 22nd I received just over 7,200 visits to my site according to Google Analytics. That’s about 240 visits / day. On May 23, due to the StumbleUpon traffic, I received 12,265 visits in ONE DAY. That’s crazy.

Of course I am well aware that Stumble Upon traffic is not the same as regular traffic as it has a much higher bounce rate, but it’s still fun to get the bomb dropped on you like that once in a while just for fun. I’m sure I picked up at least a few readers. Tomorrow I’ll be able to tell if my Feedburner count went up.

One thing that I was really impressed with is my hosting partner, Hostgator. During the time I was getting the traffic, my site was still loading fast without any major hiccups or anything. Not that 12,000 visits in one day is a massive undertaking but when I normally only get about 240 visits per day it’s always nice to be able to test your hosting partner to see how they can handle slightly larger traffic loads. I know my previous hosting partner couldn’t even handle the 240 visits per day I was getting.

According to my reports, I used up just over 2.5 Gigabytes of bandwidth today during the StumbeUpon Bombing and it didn’t seem like Hostgator broke a sweat.

How I Got Over 12,000 Visits From Stumble Upon in One Day

I wish I had some super secret social media marketing technique for you on how I got Stumble Upon to pay attention to my post, but in reality all I did was spend a few hours writing up a list of tips that I thought would really provide value and help people out there. I have heard that Digg and Stumble Upon like lists so when I wrote this one up I decided to pull AdSense off the list completely and to stick on a Digg badge just in case someone wanted to Digg the article.

I did no social media promoting, I didn’t do any kind of Digg campaign or anything. All I did was to write what I believed to be a quality article and I posted it up just like I do every other night of the week. As I write this, the article currently also has 14 Diggs which is the most Diggs I’ve ever gotten on any one article. These are all Diggs from people who have read the article and decided to Digg it.

Hopefully this offers some hope to the rest of you who are wondering if the only people getting traffic from Stumble Upon are people who know some secret you don’t. The only secret is to just keep writing good quality content and eventually you will get picked up by Stumble Upon or Digg and you’ll get to test out your hosting partner as well. :)

Now that I’ve seen what Stumble Upon does when you hit their Buzz page, I’m really curious as to what happens when you hit it big with Digg. I’ll let you know when it happens. :)

    Major Congrats,

But what was that conversation we once had about luck?????

You must be connecting to the “thinking substance” quite well these days.

    Good Job,

    Ace

@Michael Miles: Yes, I got a huge jump. The RSS feed counter jumped from 211 to 316, so I got 105 new subscribers. That’s almost a 50% jump in one day. I’m so excited to welcome so many new readers.

    Congratulations Paul, keep going!

I saw a spike in my stats during Christmas with visitors coming from Stumble Upon. The stats were like this for each day: … 0, 0, 1, 0, 1, 9, 1250, 3801, 89, 61, 49, 34, 20… Today I’m back at 1 visitor per day, which is quite sad ;-) But then again, I have never worked in marketing or sales so even if my articles are good I still need to work on the distribution part of my blogging.

Your link to your stumbled post is broken.

SU is great for waves of traffic then some trickle afterward. You may want to consider using a plugin that wouldn’t show Adsense to SU visitors since they can cause your Adsense account to be ’smart priced’. I had this happen on my flagship blog so I removed Adsense from it and I use affiliate ads now.

@Frank C: Thanks for the tips! Fixed the link.

Do you know of a specific plugin that does that? I actually didn’t put AdSense on that page with the 101 list, but my other pages have AdSense.

Don’t we just love surprises like that! Twice in the last month, one of my websites was mentioned on national television, including The Morning Show. I woke up that morning (by morning, I mean noonish) and checked my “numbers.” I thought it was a mistake when I saw $900… Traffic stats varried according to source, but those were my first $5,000 blockbuster. I loooooove surprises.

I had always heard of the Stumblebombs! Lol, cool stuff man, what makes it even better, is that you didn’t do any secret ninja stumble tactics, just plain old good writing. Good stuff sir.

Writing quality content is really important. Your site has a very nice design.

Hostgator is a good host but your site was loading fast maybe because not too many people are there on your server if your on shared hosting. Hostgator does oversell.
