Action Without Aligned Thinking is Futile
Very often we get so caught up in the busyness of everyday life that we don’t take the time to really get clear on what we want and to align our thoughts in that direction. This is even more common during the transition phases of our lives.
I’ve been reading through some books on Law of Attraction again lately and especially the new “Money and the Law of Attraction” book by Esther Hicks. Very good book by the way. There is one sentence in the book that I absolutely love and I think it really spoke to me because I may have been committing this mistake in my life lately.
“No amount of action can compensate for misaligned thought.”
I absolutely love that line. When I read it, I felt like someone just smacked me in the forehead. This is stuff I already know, yet I’ve been making this exact mistake lately - getting so busy “taking action” that I haven’t made time to just sit, relax, visualize and get my thoughts aligned on what I truly want from life.
I actually sit down to think and write in my journal pretty much every single night, but what I haven’t been doing is I haven’t been really allowing myself to dream a little bit and visualizing and getting myself in an emotional state of joy and alignment with what I truly want. Instead I’ve been “strategizing” and trying to think my way through the process.
Law of Attraction will attract whatever we predominantly focus on in our lives and since I’ve been predominantly focusing on problem solving, strategy, productivity, and creating content, I’ve been attracting more and more of that into my life. These are all wonderful things, and there’s nothing wrong with creating content, and solving problems and strategy and all that, but these are all just “things we do” on our journey towards what we truly want.
What I haven’t been doing is really setting time aside to dream, to visualize what I really want and trying to get myself into a place where I’m sending out “I already have this” vibrations. There is a big difference in sending out “I want this” vibrations and “I already have this” vibrations when it comes to Law of Attraction.
A lot of people will make a statement like “I want to make money doing what I love” but really what they are saying is that CURRENTLY they are not making money doing what they love. This type of vibration will attract more of the same, so they will continue to NOT make money doing what they love, but instead their WANTINGNESS of making money doing what they love will increase. Meaning, they still won’t make money doing what they love, but their desire for it will continue to increase and so will their level of frustration.
The real “secret” with Law of Attraction is to realize that we must first BE in the state that we desire to be in, in order to have the things that we want to attract which we hope will put us in that state. I know that’s a mouth-full. Basically what I mean is that let’s say that you want a new car. The reason you want the new car is because your old one keeps crapping out and the last time it died, it happened on the highway and you couldn’t even pull off the road and it was very embarrassing for you to stand there in the middle of the highway waiting for the tow truck to arrive. It was at that moment that you created the desire for a new car.
Since then you’ve been getting into your old car every morning and you’ve been sending out “I don’t want this car!” vibes every single day. You’ve taken action to try to make a new car come into your life, but nothing is working. You’ve tried taking on some overtime work in order to save up for a down payment on a new car, but as soon as you saved up some money the hot water tank in your house blew and ate through your savings. You tried to apply for credit to afford a new car, but you found out someone’s been using your credit card and your credit has been damaged. No matter which direction you try to go in, bringing that new car into your life just isn’t happening.
This is most likely due to the fact that your thoughts are not aligned with your actions. You’re trying to “solve” the problem at the level of action, bypassing the more important step of aligning your thoughts.
You can’t ever attract what you want in life by focusing on what you don’t want. That is impossible. You must realize that the things that you don’t want in life, such as a piece of crap car that breaks down in the middle of the highway are only there to provide you with the contrast you need to determine what you DO want. Once they provide you with the contrast, and you are able to see what you DO want by experiencing what you DON’T want, it’s time to let go of those contrasting thoughts. Meaning, once you attract a contrasting item which shows you what you don’t want from you life, use it to get super clear on what you DO want and then forget about it. Don’t obsess over it, or you’ll never get rid of it from your life.
If your old car died on the highway and you felt unsafe and embarrassed, get over it. It died, you realized it was time to get a new car, no point crying about it for the next three years. It was there in your life to provide you contrast so that you could get clear as to what you want. You made the decision to get a new car, now focus strictly on that direction and it will manifest a lot quicker in your life.
What does this mean? This means giving no energy towards your old car. If you need to drive it for a while longer while you create the new car of your dreams in your life, be OK with that. Don’t resist it. Don’t get into your old car and slam the door calling it a piece of crap. Don’t curse at it when it won’t start on the first turn of the key. Don’t tell stories to everyone at work about how crappy your car is and how your life is ruined because of this crappy car you’ve got. Don’t curse at the TV when you see the same manufacturer as your crappy car doing commercials. All these types of things just prolong how long you’ll keep your car because you are unconsciously attracting it into your life and keeping it’s replacement out of the picture.
So what should you do? Start telling a different story. Start talking about the new car you’ll be getting. Start noticing the commercials on TV of the new car manufacturer you really want, and get excited when they come on. Even if you can’t afford that car, start visualizing it. Close your eyes and imagine yourself driving that car. Go on their websites and pick out the color you want and the options package. Put 100% of your “thought energy” to your new car, and 0% towards complaining about your old car.
The same goes for careers, relationships, cars, toys, health, and anything else you want from your life. You’ll never attract what you want in life by putting all your mental energy into trying to run away from what you don’t want. Even if you get yourself to take all the action in the world towards achieving your goals, they will never materialize if the action steps you’re taking are done with “stinkin thinkin” going on in the background.
How much time are you spending taking “action” towards becoming an Inspired Money Maker in a given week?
How much time are you spending visualizing and getting your thoughts aligned on becoming an Inspired Money maker in a given week?
Ask yourself these questions because it’s important that you have these in proper balance. Without aligned thinking, action is futile no matter how much of it you take.
This also means that if you want to make money doing what you love, stop telling people stories about how much you hate your job and how crappy things are at work, and how much your boss sucks and how you hate working in that hell-hole etc. Focus on what you WANT, not on what you DON’T WANT.

Paul
I really like this post. It’s amazing how many times I send out a negative vibe when I take account of each thought. I think that simply making a conscious effort to remove negativity from our lives will have a profound effect on wealth, health, and happiness. This plus work plus perseverance are the active ingredients to creating “luck”.

You’re not alone T.
Here’s a little hint. Look around you and take inventory of everything you already have in your life and say to yourself “I want a _________” filling in the blank of what you’re looking at. For example, look at the couch you have and say “I want a nice couch” and then sit on the couch you have. You want it, and so it is in your life.
Let’s say you have Sony TV, then say “I want a Sony TV” and then take pleasure in the fact that you want it and you have it. Let’s say you’re wearing a nice pair of shoes, say to yourself “I want a nice pair of shoes” and then take pleasure in the fact that you want nice shoes and so you have nice shoes.
Once we fully take inventory of all the things we want & already have, we’ll quickly realize that the things we don’t yet have are in the minority. Our challenge is that once we “attain” something we want, we forget about it and ignore it like we never wanted it, unless of course someone takes it away and then we want it again.
The secret is to realize that we still want the things we want, and realize that this feeling of wanting something with the full realization that we already have it IS the feeling that will get you all the other things you want that you don’t yet actually have.
Excellent read Paul, I love the way you used the car as an example. That makes it easier for readers to relate to the situation. Keep it up!
Negative thinking will attract negative people, and cause negative things to happen. Our minds are the single-handed most powerful tools we have as humans. I have quite a few friends that suffer from the negative bug severely, and I hate to say it, but success will never reach their doorsteps unless a change is made. Two words that I use to remind myself on a daily basis of the impact of negative and misaligned thinking:
Thought Manifestation
If you think it, visualize it, and take the necessary steps to achieve it, it will manifest itself.
I love having your blogs pop up in my igoogle reader, as today I definitely needed to read this post! I’ve just transitioned to a new job (which I love) but noticed that I was starting to think about other things in my life that also need improvement — but I wasn’t clear/thinking about what I wanted, instead I was getting overwhelmed and annoyed at what I didn’t have yet/achieved yet.
Relaxing and realigning one’s thoughts is crucial to really getting back on track and making things happen. It’s so easy sometimes to focus entirely on the problem, rather than visualizing the solution. Thanks for the great post - good work!
Great post, I enjoyed finding your site and have adding to my list to view and read.
Make it great,

I’ve been having trouble exactly of the type you described: misaligned thinking! This article has really helped me. I can apply it to things in my life that need improvement, just like you did with the car example.
Thank you for writing this because I was just feeling pretty down about something but reading this gave me a much needed “kick in the pants” as they say.
I intend to focus on this example next time I start to feel down as a reminder.
Hi Paul,
Neal Walsh also talks about this in Conversations with God. I wasn’t keen on reading it because of the title but in the end I found it to be quite fascinating. In there the author has a conversation with God (actually more of an argument which is funny) and God says (I’m paraphrasing but you get the gist) - “well you wanted more so I gave you more wanting”! Really it’s the Be, Do, Have mentality we need - to BE what we want first leads to the HAVING.
Leah.. you are so right. I think that is what Shakespear was talking about - To be or not to be - that is the question. In fact THAT is the only question. All else is filler. You might enjoy a book called “Harmonic Wealth” by James Ray. He was one of the contributors to “The Secret”. It’s all about your vision of reality.
Nick.
Oooh! This is powerful. It’s amazing how we sabotage ourselves with speaking one way and thinking another.
The quote from Hicks about action not being aligned with thought gave me the mental image of a hamster running on one of those wheels–working so hard but never going anywhere. What a relief and start of a new way of living it is to focus on and believe we can have what we want.
I like your suggestion about noting what we have that we once wanted and now have and still want. It’s a short profound step from there to noting what we want and feeling it is already ours. If we can do this once we can do it infinite times.
Really good article Paul. The book you refer to is one of the most powerful reminders of our mostly neglected divine creative powers that I have come across in years.
It’s so easy to dimiss the little things only to have them pop up to “annoy” us in daily life if we don’t focus on what we really want and vibrate to attract it.
Things get so much easier when we tune in…it’s amazing.
@ Nick - Thanks very much for the book recommendation. I will take a look on Amazon
