Do You Have the Courage to be Rich?

Comments: 4 Posted by : Paul Piotrowski

Imagine if you went into a room with 19 friends of yours. With you, there are 20 people in that room. You represent 5% and they all represent 95%. You grab everyone’s attention and tell them all that you have something to tell them.

“Hey guys, I just wanted to take a second to share something with you. How many of you have credit cards?”

Everyone puts up their hands.

“How many of you are paying somewhere around 15-18% interest on those cards?”

Everyone puts their hands up.

“How many of you carry a balance on those cards.”

About 80% of the room has their hands up.

“Did you guys know that if you call the credit card company and ask them to lower your interest rate, they will lower your interest on your credit card to about 9% or less? It might cost you a small annual fee of $10 or so, but they will do it.”

Silence. Blank stares.

“Yeah right!” someone screams out and they all go back to talking amongst themselves and as you walk by you hear a few comments in the distance “Maybe his credit card company doesn’t like making money, but mine would never do that.” and “He probably got suckered into some kind of short term low interest thing on balance transfers and then they’ll hit him up for an even bigger rate later.”

If you imagine yourself in this scenario, how would you feel if nobody in that room believed you even though you *knew* for a fact that this is possible and in fact you just switched your credit card to a low interest card that very morning with zero hassle? Would you try to go around and individually convince everyone that it is true? What if they argued with you and refused to listen? Would you be ok with that? Can you accept being “different” from 95% of the population?

That is exactly what you’re going to have to do if you wish to build wealth. You are going to have to become used to knowing things that others don’t know, and being ok with the fact that most people will never listen to you even though you have a lot to offer them. You will know exact, specific, proven strategies to accomplish X, whatever that is, and most of the people out there will never believe you, even if you show them “proof”. You will have to become comfortable with being a contrarian.

As you start to make building wealth a focus point in your life you will very quickly begin to acquire specialized knowledge in this area that most people will not know about. In fact, the knowledge you will learn will most likely be the exact OPPOSITE to what most people believe. That is just the nature of being a specialist in any field. Money, wealth, prosperity, whatever you want to call it is exactly the same. All the things that the “general public” believes about money is exactly what’s keeping 95% of them broke. When they’re all talking about how great real estate is, you need to be looking at the stock market. When they’re all talking about how crappy real estate is and how well the stock market is doing, you need to be looking at real estate. Whichever way they’re looking, look the other way.

If you are in a room with 19 people who make an average of $30k/year and your ambition is to make $200k/year, you will most likely have totally different beliefs than they will and it takes guts to do that. While all of them are talking about how expensive gas is getting, you might be thinking about buying a Hummer. While they are talking about the latest real estate property their cousin flipped, you might be thinking about your stock portfolio. While they’re talking about pension plans 20 years down the road, you might be thinking about retiring in 2 years.

How do you develop this courage?

Pick a topic. It can be anything. Lets take nutrition for example. Pick one tiny little part of it like lets say the benefits of milk as it pertains to calcium in your bones. What is the common public perception on that? Milk does a body what? Good right? Go to a book store and skim through 10 books written by credible nutritionists and you will find out that milk is not as good for you as the dairy foundation tries to portray in their clever commercials. This is just an example, it doesn’t matter if I’m right or wrong or if milk is good or bad. Go out there and study something specific and find something that the general public doesn’t know about where you can have an opposite view on that specific thing. Now you’re part of the 5% in that specific area. How does it feel? Do you feel like you have to run and tell everyone about this new discovered secret you found? Go and tell them and see what happens.

Learn from the experiment. Try it again with something else. What will you learn? You will learn that most people don’t care, they don’t want to learn anything new, they don’t want to know any secrets, they are perfectly fine being the 95% that doesn’t really know what’s going on. Can you live with that? Like I said, it takes guts and courage to live your life like that.

Keep doing this type of research in different areas of your life. Talk to experts in certain fields and ask them specifically to tell you something they know that the general public thinks the opposite about and you’ll hear lots of cool stuff from them. Become comfortable with this way of thinking, of being different in your beliefs from the rest of the “herd”.

Thats a nice idea. I’ve kinda been that different guy with my peers though in slightly different terms compared to your examples. And I’ve always wanted to offer people more than what they know to be fact though it may be contrary. I’ve been ridiculed and even disliked for opening my mouth but now this will take me a step forward. I’m gonna try it out. Slowly though but I am gonna definitely do so.

Yes, I’ve tried telling people about ‘arcane’ stuff before I read this article. People will not believe you, scoff at you… but never once have I considered myself to be in a bad position, it’s their problem if they don’t believe in you despite the truth, the evidence of it. Nowadays I keep that knowledge to myself unless someone asks about it.
