‘The Out’ in a Subjective Reality

This article is about ‘the out’ in a subjective reality.  In order to understand what I mean by a subjective reality, you’ll first need to read Steve Pavlina’s article ‘Subjective Reality Q&A’ and then come back to learn about ‘the out’.

Firstly, I love the way Steve outlines the concepts in his Subjective Reality article.  I am thinking about what to write to ‘you’, but really I realize that I, in fact need to think about what I need to write to myself.

I think the biggest factor which has kept me from fully believing a subjective reality is something I call ‘the out’.  What is ‘the out’?  Well, basically, let’s assume for a second that reality is subjective and that we can create anything we want with thought as long as we truly believe that we can create that thing.  Well, ‘the out’ is kind of a self-imposed control mechanism we created for ourselves to keep ourselves from truly being sure that we are in a subjective reality.

Let me try to explain with a simpler example.  Let’s just say that you realize one day that we are inside a subjective reality.  Many different books I’ve read, the Star Trek Holodeck, The Matrix and other movies I’ve watched have all hinted towards this possibility.  Lets say for a second that you realize this possibility and decide you want to ‘test it out’, so you decide that you will learn how to manifest something out of nothing because to you that will be how you can ‘prove’ to yourself that a subjective reality exists.

Ok, so you’re living your normal life, you’re sitting on the couch at home and you decide to try this out.  So you think to yourself, ok, if a subjective reality exists I will manifest a double pepperoni pizza to appear in front of me right now.  You close your eyes, you let your doubts disappear for just a second and you focus your thoughts on nothing but creating and manifesting a pizza when all of a sudden your little ritual is interrupted by some idiot at the door ringing your doorbell.  You get off the couch, and go downstairs and open the door to see who’s there.  It’s the pizza guy and he’s got a double-pepperoni pizza in his hand.

(PAUSE) <—- Here, there is a pause in your consciousness.  A pizza has been manifested out of nothing.  You never ordered it and it just arrived.  It didn’t go POOF and appear in front of you but this is still a miracle.  You smile inside for a second with this objective reality shattering experience you just created.

(PAUSE) <—- Now a sub-conscious choice is made.  Am I ready to live a life based on a subjective reality?  Or do I want to go back to thinking the world is an objective reality and this subjective stuff is a possibility but I haven’t proved it yet.  If I am not ready to move forward, this is where I would engage what I call ‘the out’.

Lets assume that we engage ‘the out’.  What would that look like?

One possibility could be that the pizza delivery guy asks ‘Hi, is this 1234 Anywhere Street?’, giving you your neighbours address.  You say to him ‘oh, no, sorry you got the wrong house, this is 1232. 1234 is my neighbour at the house next door.’  Pizza guy apologizes and you go back upstairs.  You’re a bit ‘freaked out’ because it’s really weird that as soon as you were trying to manifest a pizza the pizza guy showed up at your door, but the fact that your neighbour ordered the pizza ‘explains it’, so you feel a bit weirded out but still not convinced at the fact that a subjective reality exists.

Whenever you manifest a miracle that would shatter your illusionary objective reality, an equal or greater ‘out’ is always ready to be engaged by your sub-conscious mind to keep you in line still believing in an objective reality.  You might have already encountered one or two of these or a whole bunch of them.  Weird events that felt really WEIRD, only to be explained away a few moments later, with only the feeling of weirdness which stays with you for a while longer.

So what now?  Well, I think the only way to truly experience and realize that we are part of a subjective reality is to eliminate the requirement for ‘the out’.  You are creating ‘the out’ in order to protect your current reality.  You have a lot invested in believing in the world you are part of today.  What would happen if all of a sudden everything in it was just a shattered illusion?  Would you rather just like to go back to the way things were before?  Of course you would, it’s what you’ve done each time before.  You might have engaged ‘the out’ a few hundred thousand times already, but the question is simply ‘Are you ready now?’.

I think the only way to go past this point and not have “the out” engage itself automatically is to allow it to disappear.  Accept the possibility of a subjective reality, and then run through some ‘what if’ scenarios.  What if subjective reality exists?  How would that change your life as you know it?  Could you handle it?  To what degree?

Ponder this.  How far would you allow yourself to go down the rabbit hole before you engaged “the out” to pull you back to the comfyness of ignorance?  Play with it if you wish.  Don’t be afraid.  You can always engage an out whenever you wonder down the path too far.  There is nothing to lose and a lot to gain.

After reading Steve’s article I’m definitely ready to play with this a bit some more.  Have fun!

Paul
